Architectural Legacy

THE EXCURSION:
Lunuganga, Geoffrey Bawa’s “garden within a larger garden,” is tucked beneath a steep dust road in Bentota and serves as an oasis for Sri Lanka’s diverse natural world, as well as a respite for both local and international traffic. Bawa bought the prior rubber and cinnamon plantation in 1948 to create “something that would be fashioned via his present and destiny dreams and imaginary.” Witness how he changed the area from a plantation to a lawn, transforming an oppressive colonial practice into a beautiful environment teamed with unique flora and fauna.Travel along the coast to Bentota with your guide, where you will see the Bentota Beach Hotel in Sri Lanka. This hotel was one of Asia’s first and most well-known lodging facilities, thanks to a number of innovative firsts and global connections.Head to the Jetwing Lighthouse! Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most-known architect, designed an eclectic mix of Moorish, Oriental, and Dutch influences that can be seen everywhere, from the rampart-like façade entry to the centrally situated mind-blowing spiral staircase and the uncommon use of rustic colour palettes throughout.
